From Foundation to Restoration
The Monastery of San Pelayo de Cerrato, located in Cevico Navero, Palencia, is a valuable testament to the historical and spiritual heritage of Castilla. Founded in 934, this monastery has been a key religious, cultural, and economic center in the region. Its strategic location on a hillside, surrounded by natural beauty, made it a spiritual refuge that supported monastic self-sufficiency.
Over the centuries, the monastery witnessed significant historical changes, experiencing periods of both prosperity and decline. After the 1835 disamortization, the monastery was abandoned, nearly erasing its presence. However, its legacy endures in the historical memory of the region.
Thanks to the Fundación Grupo Siro, the restoration project has been completed, returning the monastery to its original grandeur and re-establishing its connection with the surrounding natural landscape. Today, the Monastery of San Pelayo de Cerrato stands as a beacon of recovered heritage, ensuring the preservation of its centuries-old legacy for future generations.
