Our History & Heritage

The Monastery of San Pelayo de Cerrato, founded in 934 in Cevico Navero, Palencia, stands as a remarkable testament to Castilla’s historical and spiritual legacy. Its strategic location and natural surroundings made it a key monastic refuge during the Middle Ages. Over the centuries, it experienced periods of both prosperity and decline, ultimately being abandoned after the disentailment of 1835.

Thanks to its current owners, Lucía and Juan Manuel, the monastery has been meticulously restored, reclaiming its grandeur and deep connection with the surrounding landscape. Today, it stands as a tribute to Spain’s rich cultural and historical heritage.

As such a special place, it is of importance that those who visit get the chance to appreciate and experience it in all its depth and authenticity.

Surrounded by Nature

The Monastery of San Pelayo de Cerrato is nestled in a truly unique natural setting, amidst dryland crops and the characteristic Mediterranean hills. Surrounded by holm oaks, junipers, and gall oaks, and crossed by the Arroyo del Maderón, this area is home to an impressive diversity of flora and fauna. Along its banks, poplars thrive, while its fertile lowlands are cultivated with alfalfa, oats, and wheat.

Its six-hectare garden, home to ancient cork oaks and millenary junipers, offers a sanctuary of tranquility and reflection. Recognized with the Green Life Country seal, the monastery stands as a testament to the harmonious coexistence of natural and cultural heritage.
